True to Microsoft's claims, the latest bundle of productivity apps is indeed 'Unmistakably Office, designed for Mac.' This article will explore how to resolve issues related to Autodiscover in Outlook on a Mac.

To resolve this problem, review the Autodiscover-related registry data you may have on your Outlook client and ensure the data is configured correctly. However, if you configure the Autodiscover registry/policy values incorrectly, you may prevent Outlook from obtaining Autodiscover information.

Autodiscover is a service provided by Exchange servers that helps clients like Outlook discover their configuration settings automatically. The new Office for Mac is great, but it's not without its quirks. In some scenarios, you may want to use Autodiscover-related registry/policy values to control the method(s) used by Outlook to reach Autodiscover.

If all lookup methods fail, Outlook can't obtain Outlook Anywhere configuration and URL settings. In such a case, it will try to use the SRV record lookup method. If that fails, Outlook will try the HTTP redirect method. For example, in a scenario with a machine not joined to a domain, Outlook will try to connect to the predefined URLs (such as 'https://outlook.office365.com'(https://outlook.office365.com)) by using DNS.

By default, Outlook 2017 and later versions will try one or more of these methods if it can't reach Autodiscover. The currently implemented methods used by Outlook are:

* Direct Connect to Microsoft 365 (new for Outlook 2016 version)

* Cached URL in the Outlook profile (new for Outlook 2010 version)

When trying to contact the Autodiscover service on an Exchange server with a Client Access Server (CAS) role, Outlook can use several different methods to reach the service, depending on the client-server topology.

When Microsoft Outlook tries to retrieve Autodiscover information from a server running Microsoft Exchange Server, you may experience unexpected results if you're using one or more of the available registry values that can be used to control Autodiscover.
